Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is updating the Airport Master Plan!

The Peninsula Airport Commission is preparing an update to the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (NNWIA) Master Plan. The purpose for updating the Master Plan is to establish the vision for this vital facility and chart the new course for the upcoming 20-year period.

The study will provide analysis and a recommended course of action, detailing the optimum way the airport can grow over time to meet aviation transportation needs and at the same time provide opportunities for increased economic stimulus to the region. The study will also be a demonstration project for two emerging topics of direct interest to FAA Headquarters. The master plan will have environmental sustainability as a key foundation and will also furnish data and analysis for a new electronic platform for managing all of the data pertinent to airport planning and design. Having NNWIA host these pilot studies places our airport at the forefront of two exciting new FAA initiatives.

To permit broad public participation in the study process, the Airport is forming two Advisory Committees. The Policy committee will be comprised of key leaders and representatives from the community, Airport leaders, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Aeronautics Division of Virginia Department of Transportation (DOAV), neighborhood and community groups, among others. The study process will also include a Technical committee comprised of professionals in the planning industry and others whose vocation interfaces directly with the Airport. Members will include representatives from the Airport, users and tenants, along with federal, state, regional and local planning agencies.

During the study period, informational workshops will be held to allow the general public to comment on study findings, ask questions, and provide input. Comments received will be addressed and help shape the final recommendations.

Please visit this page periodically to keep abreast of the progress and to offer comments on this key planning project at PHF.
